Caravanning on a budget

Category: Caravanning

Once you factor in the cost of a caravan, petrol and equipment, caravanning might appear to be an expensive adventure.

It might cost a bit of money to set yourself up, but in comparison to other types of holidays, caravanning is much cheaper. A holiday by caravan or campervan is a great way to tour Australia; however, inadequate planning can result in your trip costing a lot more than what it should. Here are some ways you can save money before you set off on your adventure.

  • Save money by buying a second-hand caravan.
  • Fit out your caravan with kitchen utensils you have at home.
  • Take a portable solar-power grid with you that you can charge your phones and music players with.
  • Eat cheaply with homemade meals such as pasta.
  • Make sure your caravan has a check up with the mechanic before you set off.
  • Compare costs at caravan parks so you know you’re getting the best deals — find out where there are legal sites you can use for free.
  • Save money on petrol by not towing more than you need and try not to go against the wind.

We purchased a small inverter that plugs into the car cigarette lighter. It charges our mobile, camera battery and laptop as we drive along. Don’t need to start the gen set if we hit a free camp that doesn’t allow them to be used. Lots of small country towns have very cheap van parks that are often close to bigger towns, the hotels in these towns often have very cheap country pub meals. A day off with a hot meal is always welcome.
