Discover Paronella Park

Category: Drive Travel

When Spanish expatriate José Paronella stumbled across a section of land in Tropical Queensland in 1914 during his honeymoon in Australia, little did he know that the section of rainforest scrub would soon become his personal legacy.

After purchasing the land that is now Paronella Park (south of Cairns and Innisfail), the intrepid gardener envisioned a sprawling park, and went on to create an outdoor space for countless generations to enjoy in the future.

After a tumultuous history, including flooding and fire, Paronella Park is now listed as part of the National Trust and is considered to be a Queensland tourism icon.

The park’s current owners are committed to preserving José Paronella’s original architectural work. Dotted with intricate stonework, sprawling stone steps, fountains and Spanish-inspired buildings, the original park and gardens are preserved and maintained.

An historic onsite hydro-electric power project adds an interesting element to discover when exploring the park on foot, and is an integral part of the park’s commitment to sustainable solutions.

Visitors can explore Paronella Park during the day, join a night-time tour, or book a one-night stay in the onsite caravan and cabin park. Find out more about the history of the park and its attractions, by clicking here.
