When deciding on a destination to discover during a Queensland road trip, travellers are faced with an open slate of holiday options.
For travellers keen on taking an outback road trip, the town of Thargomindah offers a range of interesting historical sites to explore.
Located alongside the Bullo River, approximately 1000 kilometres west of Brisbane, the town of Thargomindah is a gateway to three of the country’s states – Queensland, South Australia and New South Wales. The crossover border point is called Cameron Corner and is a popular landmark for tourists passing through the area.
Steeped in history, Thargomindah became an historical home base for the iconic Cobb & Co. coaches travelling through the outback. Thargomindah was also the first town in Australia to use hydro-electric power and its hydro power plant is one of Australia’s the oldest working plants. Whilst planning your trip to Thargomindah, you might consider incorporating further travel to the Flinders Rangers in South Australia, venturing to Birdsville in Queensland, or exploring the ‘Adventure Way’, a popular four-wheel-drive thoroughfare from Queensland to South Australia. During your stay in the town, you may be keen to try a horseriding tour or visit some of the local waterholes.

While in Thargomindah make sure you call in at the Visitor Information Centre. It is housed in a beautifully restored old building which used to be the hospital. It has the biggest range of printed information we’ve seen on our trip out west (at least it did two years ago). The garden is lovely too.
