As Australia is such a large country, an Aussie road trip is a true adventure that can encompass a diverse array of landscapes.
Because road trippers often cover such large distances – putting stress on both the car and the patience of fellow passengers – a few careful preparations before hitting the road can help make the trip as smooth as possible.
Here is a quick checklist of things to consider before a road trip:
- Top up the oil and water in the engine.
- Replenish the water supply for the windscreen wipers and add a drop of detergent that removes dirt and insects (this can be found at most car shops).
- Check the tread and pressure of the car’s tyres.
- Check the spare tyre is still in good condition and refresh your knowledge of changing a tyre.
- Make sure mobile phones, cameras and navigation systems are placed on the charger the night before the trip.
- Pre-plan where you will take breaks and what activities you can do during the stop. By planning stopovers in advance, the driver will be less likely to attempt avoiding breaks and getting tired.
- Pack any maps (or a GPS) that may be necessary to help you find your destination.
- Create an emergency tool kit that has a set of jumper leads, a screwdriver, wrench, torch, a few old rags, and a car jack.
- Pack at least one water bottle for each person in the car, as well as some snacks.
- Remind each person in the car to bring along one CD they like, as this will create a fair and balanced playlist.
- Leave an itinerary with friends and family if you are planning a long trip.
- Before packing, check the weather forecast so you can pack appropriate clothing.
- Refer to RACQ’s Trip Planner to help determine the best route to your destination.
