Greener ways to kill mould

Category: Eco

Mould doesn’t really have a good reputation. It is not particularly nice to look at, it can break down and destroy what it grows on and it has been linked to a number of health problems.

Although household bleach can kill mould successfully, there are a couple of ways you can say goodbye to mould while still being kind to the planet. Did you know vinegar can kill more than 80 percent of mould?

Pour some white vinegar into a spray bottle and spray the affected area directly and leave it to dry. Alternatively, for something a little less potent on the senses, mix two teaspoons of tea tree oil and two cups of water together in a spray bottle, and again spray directly onto the problem areas.

Both of these combinations can work on anything from mouldy ceilings to shower curtains. Remember prevention can sometimes be better than cure, so do your best to keep bathrooms and kitchens ventilated, limiting the moist environments where mould likes to grow.

Sounds like a great idea however such a short term solution. I live in central queensland on the coast and when we get all that rainy summer weather with high humidity the mould raises it’s ugly head and starts appearing on everything almost overnight…bookshelves, photoframes, shoes, handbags, clothes and walls especially around the bookcases….This results in hours of cleaning, with vinegar which we read about, making sure the surfaces of the bookshelves etc were soaked in vinegar so as to discourage the mould growing back….all to no avail. Last summer we must have cleaned everything of mould 3 or sometimes 4 times. What I’d like is a solution that keeps it from growing back! I’m a teacher and pulling apart bookshelves that contain hundreds of books and folders is not my idea of fun nor do I have the time to do this. Does anyone have a solution????
