Weddings are elaborate affairs. Have you ever considered how much one can cost the earth?
With more awareness of sustainability nowadays, there is thankfully a green alternative. From organic catering, recycled invitations, eco honeymoons to natural skincare, there are a variety of ways to make your wedding a greener one. Declaring that you and your partner are opting for a natural approach to your wedding is imperative; guests will get into the swing of things if they know. One of the first decisions to make is the location. The travel distance to the event is something you need to consider. Obviously, somewhere close to where the majority of guests live is better. Also, you could have the reception and wedding in the same location and encourage guests to carpool.
There are many other factors to consider:
- Paper: Decide whether you want traditional wedding invitations and if you do, use 100% post-consumer recycled paper. You can encourage your guests to email RSVPs to save on paper too.
- Decor and flowers: Fresh flowers, for most brides, are a must, but they’re not the best things for the environment. Opt for creative centrepieces that are reusable instead.
- Clothing: Choose a second-hand dress from vogue vintage shops or try to find old material you can transform into a dress.
- Beauty: Use nothing but organic and natural makeup.
- Catering: Try to find an organic caterer who understands the importance of a green wedding.
- Gifts: Find favours, aka bonbonnieres, made from recycled materials.
- Honeymoon: Find a volunteering project or eco resort, and if you’re flying, don’t forget to carbon offset your flight.
