Healthier breakfast foods

Category: Food+Recipe

Breakfast is an important determinant on the energy you will have throughout the day.

If you skip it, or eat a breakfast meal with low nutritional value, it can sometimes slow down your metabolism and result in unwanted weight gain. Many seemingly healthy breakfast foods are packed with sugar and fat, and are not always the best choices for a good start to the day. However, with a little nutrition guidance, you can choose the right foods to create a wholesome breakfast.

Avoid toasted muesli or cereals with high sugar content, and look for whole-grain options instead, like oats, barley and bran. For sweetness, you can add a small amount of dried fruit and some probiotic yoghurt, made with skim milk and fruits. To add healthy fats, you can sprinkle on some raw almonds and seeds. If you prefer a savoury breakfast, turn your bacon and eggs into a heart-friendly meal by selecting lean bacon, adding some iron-packed spinach and using low-fat cheese spread on your toast, instead of butter.

I have made a lifetime habit of eating a large breakfast of muesli, an egg cooked in different ways and toast made with heavy organic bread with honey or marmalade, plus tea.I think it is important to make times for meals. ‘Grazing’ or eating ‘on the go’ probably results in people eating more and not as well.
