Make your own Chinese dumplings

Category: Food+Recipe

Savoury Chinese dumplings, or Jiaozi, can be made with virtually any ground meat, such as prawns, beef, chicken or pork.

Pre-rolled dumpling dough is often readily available at Asian grocery stores and you can simply add your choice of filling and then fold up the edges of the dough.

Here is a basic guide to homemade pork dumplings:

  • Combine soaked dried mushrooms, chopped onion, and water chestnuts in a large mixing bowl. Stir through minced pork.
  • Season with your choice of sauce. Traditional recipes often include soy sauce, salt, pepper, finely chopped chilli and rice wine vinegar.
  • Place one teaspoon of the filling onto the middle of each pre-rolled dumpling dough sheet.
  • Pinch the edges together to form a neat parcel.
  • Stir the dumplings in a saucepan of boiling water, and then transfer to cold water.
  • Lightly fry boiled dumplings in a frypan with a small amount of oil.
  • Serve with soy sauce or sweet chilli dipping sauce.

Alternatively, a homemade dumpling dough recipe can be found here.
