Known as The tree of life by the ancient Egyptians the fig is a wonderful and delicious fruit with many uses.
Despite the fact that figs have been in cultivation for over 3000 years they remain somewhat of a mystery item. For instance, the humble fig is a great source of high-energy food and one of the highest plant sources of calcium and fibre. They can be eaten fresh, dried, roasted, stewed, preserved, added to salads or soaked in liqueur and served over ice-cream. If you want to dress up a simple salad just add some halved figs. Also, the fig is one of the first plants that were cultivated by humans. Although commonly referred to as a fruit, the fig fruit is actually the flower of the tree. The supermarkets are abound with figs at the moment and are worth a second look if you have been avoiding them.

I love figs but they are so expensive.
