Among the United Kingdom’s foremost attractions is England’s largest national park, Lake District National Park.
The Lake District is known for its lush green scenery, vast lakes and quaint English charm, and is said to have inspired many famous authors, including Beatrix Potter.
The cool clear lakes that inspired the name of the district play a vital role in supporting the local ecosystems and also provide visitors with an opportunity to explore the region via kayak. Wetlands, ancient woodlands, craggy mountains and estuaries add to the rich and diverse landscape.
Of all the lakes, Windermere is the largest at almost 17 km long and 66 m deep. Taking a cruise along the lake can be a relaxing way to see the area. Several small towns are located near the lake, including the village of Windermere, which is full of cafes, shops and bed and breakfasts.
RACQ Travel’s 11-day tour of the United Kingdom passes through the Lake District, providing time to explore the area. Other stops on the tour include Edinburgh, Bronte Country, and Yorkshire. For more UK travel ideas, see the February/March 2012 edition of The Road Ahead magazine.
