Known as the city of love, one of the worlds fashion capitals and a gourmet-food lovers heaven, Paris is holiday destination favoured by many inveterate travellers.
Located on the River Seine, the city holds a wealth of attractions for tourists, particularly those who hold a particular passion for history and the arts. While there are many well-known attractions, such as the Eiffel Tour, Notre Dame, Champs-lyses and Sacre Couer, here are some other suggestions on how to spend your time while in Paris.
Wander through the city:
One of the delights of Paris is the fact that you can walk practically everywhere. This is not only a great opportunity for fresh air, but also to see the varying styles of architecture throughout the city. If you’re worried that you might get lost, try to always use the River Seine as your reference point.
Spend a day at Centre Pompidou:
There are many wonderful museums and galleries throughout Paris, including the Louvre, Musee d’Orsay and the Musee National Picasso. But for lovers of modern art, Centre Pompidou – the national museum of modern art –is worth allocating a day of your time for. Home to the works of Matisse, Miro, Kandinsky and Picasso, the museum holds some of the most significant artworks of modern history.
Explore Le Marais:
Literally translating to ‘The Marsh’, Le Marais is one of Paris’ most fashionable arrondissements (neighbourhoods). The area is home to large Chinese and Jewish populations and is dotted with antique and vintage boutiques as well as quaint little restaurants and Jewish bakeries.
Try a macaron or two at Laduree:
One of the French capital’s most famous patisseries, Laduree is a series of elegant tea salons with locations in Saint-Germain-des-Pres and Champs-Elysees. From macarons and cupcakes to delightful finger sandwiches, these elaborately decorated salons are worth a stop for afternoon tea.
Sit and read a book in the Luxembourg Gardens:
If you’re in need of a few hours’ rest after a day spent wandering around Paris, head to the Luxembourg Gardens –the gardens of the French Senate –and settle into one of the many seats located throughout the park. The gardens are a great spot for people watching, as they are not only popular with tourists, but with locals as well.
