Families of penguins milling about your feet, breathtaking glaciers, majestic mountain ranges and sweeping landscapes are just the beginning of what awaits travellers to the Chilean side of Patagonia.
This fjord-laden region is a wonderful travel escape at the bottom of the world. Whether you’re an intrepid explorer in search of a hiking adventure, or are simply looking for a leisurely stay amongst the picturesque countryside, Patagonia has a myriad of experiences in its repertoire.
Depending on your preferred style of holiday, Chilean Patagonia caters for most tastes. Here are a few suggested experiences to partake in the stunning region:
Horse-riding through the countryside:
With your own guide and a beautiful steed as your mode of transport, journey through the Patagonian countryside with glorious snow-capped mountains as a backdrop. Along the way you might be lucky to meet some of the local wildlife, including condors, foxes and bluebirds. Many horse-riding tours also include a gourmet lunch.
Magdalena Island Penguin Reserve:
Get up close to the black-and-white critters in their own natural reserve on Magdalena Island. Sail through the Magellan Strait to the island, which more than 50,000 penguins call home. (Hint: if you sit patiently rather than walk around, the penguins are curious creatures and will often wander right up to you.)
Torres del Paine National Park:
Home to glaciers, rivers and mountains, this national park is one of Chile’s best. Popular with lovers of flora and fauna, the park is also a wonderful hiking destination, whether you’re walking for a day or prefer an extensive 9-day trek. A highlight of the park is its namesake, Torres Del Paine–three breathtaking rock towers that reign over the natural park.
