When investing in your veggie patch, it can be easy to get carried away by the number of tools on offer and to spend a lot of money without realising it.
To begin with just the basics, the following tools provide a good list to get you started:
- A good-quality spade can last a lifetime and is great for turning over soil and digging up the weeds that could be suffocating your prized vegetables.
- Veggies such as tomatoes grow on vines, so bamboo stakes, old posts or cricket wickets can help to provide necessary support.
- A pair of pruners is useful for harvesting herbs and vegetables and pruning woody stems.
- A garden rake can be used to level soil in preparation for sowing vegetable seeds into the bed.
- A wheelbarrow is also a helpful tool for moving large plants, collecting harvested vegetables and carting other materials around the yard.

Re Veggie garden article, sweet potatoes grow below the surface of the soil. I don’t agree with the recommendation that staking them is a good idea .
I agree with T Stumm, the sweet potatoes I grow form under the soil surface also.
Oops! Thank you T.Stumm and V Cherry – that was meant to say tomatoes. We appreciate your keen eyes!
