Todays urban living often means apartment dwellers dont have the luxury of a backyard. If you dont have a yard, this doesnt mean you should be deprived of greenery in the home.
Besides having pot plants, you can create your own window box to bring the joys of a backyard into your own home. Just follow these easy steps and you’ll have a beautiful addition to your home in no time.
1) Start with two pieces of wood the same size for the front and back. These lengths should match the window width.
2) Then make two pieces of wood the same size for the sides. The size of these should reflect the width and depth you choose.
3) Then choose one piece for the bottom. This piece should be the same length as the front and back, but 4 cm wider than the sides.
4) Drill guide holes in the front and back pieces at each end. Repeat on the bottom piece but drill an additional hole in the middle to allow for drainage.
5) Glue the front and back pieces to the sides and make sure the correct sides are exposed outward. Waterproof wood glue works well. Then, using the pre-drilled holes as guides, screw the front and back pieces to the sides with galvanised screws.
6) Lastly, glue the bottom piece to the bottom of your window box and screw that into place as well. Then sand, prime and paint the window box if you desire.
7) Apply an exterior paint in the desired colour. Be sure to paint the inside and underneath to protect the wood.
Using a drill and four screws, attach the window box to the wall with screws, one in each back corner of the box.
