The food is in the oven, the champagne is chilled and the glassware is polished but you didn’t have time to organise a table centrepiece and the guests will arriving in a couple of hours.
There are a couple of table-topping solutions to be found in the kitchen and the garden that could just save the day. Freshly picked flowers from your garden can add a personal touch. Fill a decorative bowl with water, remove the flower heads and place them in the water allowing them to float on the surface.
Fresh herbs such as lavender, rosemary or basil provide a wonderful fragrance and look great placed on a decorative plate or standing up in an old jam jar. Try filling a clear vase with lemons, limes or green apples, which is a creative way to add colour. Pinecones and seashells look effective stacked simply in a glass or wooden bowl, or on a decorative plate.
Finally, a mirror laid flat in the centre of the table and decorated with tea-light candles and some pebbles from the garden can add the perfect finishing touch to a dinner table. Click here for more table centrepiece ideas.

I love the leaf dish with shells – I often use shells as a centrepiece decoration and as food servers or fruit bowls
