Mow the lawn more efficiently

Category: Home+Garden

Adjusting your mowing technique is a great way to save time and energy while doing the gardening.

It can also help to reduce the wear and usage of your mower, saving you fuel and money in the process.

As each backyard is slightly different, take into account the different obstacle and elevation issues before you begin. Establishing a mowing pattern for your yard, one that works around the various trees and items such as birdbaths, means less time is wasted.

It is also important to ensure you are prepared. Make sure your mower’s blades are sharpened, and that you mow often to keep the grass at a manageable height and prevent too much work for yourself.

There are a number of different techniques you can use to mow your lawn more efficiently. First there is the box method, which works best on a yard with straight edges that form a square or rectangle. This method is quite common and involves mowing along the edges, taking 90 degree turns, creating smaller and smaller squares of unmown grass until the entire area is mown. Try to avoid mowing in stripes as this requires a lot more energy to stop the mower and turn it around again.

Another option is the spiral method. This involves continuous turning around the yard, conserving energy and avoiding tricky corners. This can be particularly beneficial with heavy lawnmowers. Effort may be higher due to constant usage and you may also have a lot of overlap, but this method can be much easier for those with curved gardens or a lot of obstacles.
