The art of Bonsai

Category: Home+Garden

Bonsai is a Japanese form of art that involves the miniaturisation of trees. This type of garden art is particularly intricate, personal and serene, and is often based on years of research and development.

Attempting to create a Bonsai garden is not easy feat – even the best gardeners can have trouble creating and maintaining the trees’ beautiful aesthetic. If you think you’re up for the challenge, here are a few tips to begin with.

Getting started:
If this is your first attempt at cultivating Bonsai trees, start with something simple. Select a Bonsai that is right for you.

Bonsai health:
Learn about the three most important things to any plant – soil, water and sunlight. The health of your Bonsai will depend on the soil it lives in. Ask the person you buy your Bonsai from what type of soil is best for it. The water regime for your Bonsai is also important. The Bonsai feeds on bacteria in the soil that can only be produced if the soil is damp; if the soil is too dry, then the Bonsai cannot feed. Sunlight is also important. Make sure your Bonsai has exposure to light outside, but not too much because that will sap your Bonsai of its moisture. You must keep an eye out on your Bonsai at all time.

Spring time:
During spring, gardeners should do the necessary pruning so that their plants stay healthy. Prune your Bonsai during spring so that it doesn’t grow too much. Take it out of its pot and cut any major roots that are growing.
