RACQ’s Streets Ahead Program has taken care of at least one of those factors, with a fun and interactive way to educate primary school children about safe road use. Since its development in 2007, the RACQ Streets Ahead Program has educated over 40,000 Queensland primary school children about road safety.
The team has visited 61 schools this year alone, including regional tours of Noosa, Cairns, Townsville and Toowoomba, comprising more than 900 presentations to classes of up 25 students. The program brings the road to the classroom, using real road scenarios like traffic lights, intersections and crossings so children from Prep to Year 7 learn to use the road in a safe environment. Colourful characters Crunch, Thud, Bingle and Skittles guide students through four, level-appropriate presentations that cover such road safety roles as being a safe pedestrian, passenger and bicyclist.
Streets Ahead is the only educational and interactive road safety program available to Queensland primary school students and has received a lot of positive feedback for its valuable, entertaining and engaging approach. Students participate in a range of activities, including identifying how to cross roads safely, experimenting with the effects of wearing and not wearing seatbelts and helmets using eggs as crash test dummies and reviewing their knowledge through the ‘Who Wants to be Safety Smart’ interactive classroom game show.
The RACQ Streets Ahead Program revisits schools every two years, providing parents with extra peace of mind by ensuring that Queensland primary school students are well informed about their safety when using the road.
