The proud history of motorsport in Brisbane will be revived on May 30
and 31 when The Cootha Classic will commemorate an event first held on
the slopes of Mt Coot-Tha (one Tree Hill) in 1916.
The major new event is an initiative of the Historic Racing Car Club (Qld) (HRCC). Cars from the 1920s to the ‘80s will race against the clock in a timed sprint around a 1,450 metre track up and down Sir Samuel Griffith Drive – with seven corners plus chicanes. HRCC has the involvement of all the experts necessary for the control and management of the event – including CAMS, RACQ, Rotary Club, Brisbane City Council and the Queensland Police.
Channel 7 will sponsor and promote the event. Brisbane Lord Mayor, Cr Campbell Newman enthusiastically endorsed the event as a highlight of Brisbane’s 150th program and shares the expectations of the organisers that the Cootha Classic will become a significant new tourism attraction and an annual event. Interest in the event from competitors has been enormous with more than 300 entries from drivers who have committed entries of famous and historic marques including Bugatti, Ferrari,Ford, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Lotus, Brabham, Jaguar, Porsche, Holden, BMW, Lola, Chevron, MG and Mercedes.
Bikes will also be well represented with multiple world champion Kork Ballington to compete on a GP works bike plus five of Greg Hansford’s former factory GP Kawasakis (now privately owned) on display along with five Manx Nortons. The historic cars and motor bikes, rally cars and speedway cars – and their owners and drivers – will be on display in the pits areas which will be open to the public.
Public attendance will be priced at a very reasonable $20 per head per day for adults, $30 for adult two day pass (Saturday & Sunday). Concession – $15 per day, applies only to children under 14 accompanied by an adult, seniors card holders, student card holders and Shannons car show card holders. All payable cash at entry. The Cootha Classic will be an alcohol free event.
