A great way to escape with the family for a memorable holiday experience is to head off into the beautiful Australian landscape for a camping weekend.
It is a good idea to involve your kids in the planning of the getaway to help them feel involved and interested in the holiday. Practise setting up the tent in the backyard before you leave and let your kids play in the tent to build their confidence for sleeping when camping.
Choose a location that offers plenty of activities to keep the kids busy, including swimming spots, bicycle tracks, and opportunities for wildlife spotting. Also, it is helpful to choose a location that has water and cooking facilities to make your trip a little easier to manage. If it is the family’s first camping trip, try to keep the holiday to three or four nights long. Make sure you pack plenty of snacks, a first-aid kit and flashlights, and chat to your kids about safety in the outdoors and respecting nature. Some ideas and camping games to entertain the kids are to:
- Make roasted marshmallows
- Listen for and identify wildlife
- Collect natural treasures
- Find shapes in star constellations
- Play with shadow puppets using flashlights behind the tents.
