The beauty of a picnic is its simplicity, so loading up the car with everything but the kitchen sink not only defeats the purpose but might also add a great deal of unnecessary stress.
Aside from all the food and drink you are bringing, including the following five things in your picnic basket will hopefully make your picnic experience easier.
- A picnic blanket provides a comfortable place to sit, to lay out the food and to indulge in a post lunchtime nap in the sunshine.
- Plastic cutlery and crockery (including cups and glasses) are lightweight, making your basket easier to carry, but they should be heavy-duty enough for you to use again.
- Frozen water bottles are a great way to keep your food cold and leave you with cold water when they defrost.
- Pack some wet wipes to clean up unavoidable mess, especially liquids, and also to wash hands before eating if there are no taps nearby.
- One of the worst things to happen at a picnic is to realise you have a heap of rubbish or food scraps and nowhere to put them. Make sure you pack a few extra plastic bags in case there are no public rubbish bins nearby.
Also, consider food that is easy to eat with plastic cutlery or better still can be eaten just with hands. Do your best to avoid food that is sticky or melts easily because it can attract ants and other insects.
