Boondooma Dam built across the Boyne river in the early 1980s to supply water for Tarong Power Station has become one of the most popular recreational fishing spots in south east Queensland.
Go see it for yourself and wet a line at the Boondooma Dam Yellowbelly Fishing competition, being held on February 13 and 14. The competition will have adult and junior sections, including prizes for daily weigh-ins, the heaviest fish and lucky draws. More than 200,000 fingerlings are released annually into the dam, with main species being golden perch (yellowbelly), silver perch and Australian bass. Lake Boondooma is considered one of the most consistent inland fishing spots in Queensland. Anglers can try out all their favourite fishing methods – from bait fishing for perch, cod and catfish in the snags along the rockwalls; chasing bass in the main basin with shrimp and worm baits; the use of lures for both edge fishing and over the broad flats; and even deep-fly tactics. Pick up your stocked impoundment permit, which is needed to fish, from the dam’s kiosk. There are water’s edge camping sites with amenities, hot showers and laundry facilities.
