Spending time on the water boating can be a popular family hobby. Building confidence in children about boat safety will reduce the possibility of panic in an emergency situation and can help parents relax and enjoy the trip.
Lifejackets should be worn by children onboard a boat at all times. Children need to experience jumping into the water with their lifejacket on so they learn the effect of the extra buoyancy on their body.
Get your family involved in the operation of the boat. For example, show them how to turn the engine on and off and how to operate the anchor control (but make sure you let them know that this is strictly for emergency situations only). Also, make sure your children can use the radio and that they know who to call and how to call for help.
Set down some ground rules and practices for boat things like no-go zones, and where children should be when the boat is berthing. If you can make it simple and fun, children will be more likely to remember.
