Pocket knives don’t take up as much room in the car as a tent or hiking gear but their size doesn’t make them any less important. If MacGyver taught us anything, a pocket knife can come in handy when you least expect it.
There are many different types of pocket knives on the market, ranging from the basic model pocket knives to more elaborate versions sporting everything from bottle openers to nail files. Generally, all pocket knives have one or two knife blades that can come in handy for a number of things. A pocket knife can be a great substitute for tools you might not have on hand like a screwdriver or scissors. There are also several first-aid uses such as cutting bandages and pieces of wood for making splints.
When camping or hiking it is best to keep the load lighter, so rather than weighing your pack down with kitchen knives consider a pocket knife for peeling fruit and vegetables, cleaning fish or meat, and slicing cheeses or breads. Be sure to properly clean your knife between uses to prevent cross-contamination. Click here for more information on pocket knives.

Is it legal to carry a pocket knife on your person??
Mention of current weapons regulations should be made, these are very restrictive.
Also note that some countries view locking blades(an essential safety feature in my opinion) as a sinister implication that the owner has evil intent( any any where else for that matter).
I had an expensive pocket knive taken by Eurrail while travelling from England to Belgium.
