An innovative urban beehive

Category: Tech+Gadgets

The production of honey is a million-year-old naturally occurring phenomenon.

A staple ingredient in pantries, cafes and restaurants around the world, honey is usually bought from the supermarket or local market. Keeping bees at home and producing your own honey might sound like a daunting task compared to simply buying a commercial jar of honey.

Designed for keeping your own bees at home, the Philips Urban Beehive enables urban dwellers to experience beekeeping from the comfort of your own home, in a controlled environment.

Featuring an entry for the bees (with its own flowerpot on the outside), the hive is small and unobtrusive. This beehive is designed to be installed across two platforms and mounted to an external house wall, with the flower-pot entryway mounted to the outside of the house. Attached to the inside of the house wall, the hive also sports a glass vessel on the inside. Tempting curiosity, the glass part of the inside of the hive allows amateur beekeepers to look inside the hive and witness the honeybees hard at work.

Visit the Philips website to learn more about the beehive invention.
