What is lomography photography?

Category: Tech+Gadgets

Ranging from an art form and a style of photography, to a cultural phenomenon, lomography is a legendary element of photographic history.

First established in the 1990s, the culture of lomography was developed by a group of young Austrians who stumbled across an old Soviet toy-style camera in Prague in the Czech Republic. The camera was a Lomo LC-A, which continues today to be a popular lomography staple.

Lomographic (or commonly referred to as ‘lomo’) cameras produce vibrant photographs, which sometimes sport slightly blurred edges and a unique ‘finish’.

Some popular elements of lomography include attaching a fish-eye lens to the camera, which results in a curved image. Lomographers also experiment with light and colour by attaching a colourful filter to the lens to cover photos in a bright hue (for example covering the film in a red, pink or blue saturation).

Those new to lomography might find it inspiring and helpful to join a local lomography club, to swap tips and ideas with fellow lomographers.
