Healthier ways to use your microwave

Category: WellBeing

When it comes to cooking, sometimes modern conveniences can limit the nutritional value of our eating habits.

Whilst microwave ovens can be very handy when whipping up a dinner on the go, it is important to utilise them in the best way possible. Cooking meals from scratch is a useful life skill, and it’s a good idea to impart cooking skills onto younger generations, without always turning to the microwave for inspiration.

If you have time, try to get into the habit of using the oven or stovetop, and leave the microwave for when you’re under pressure. But if you are inclined to use your microwave, these tips will hopefully inspire you to make healthier choices in the kitchen:

  • Remember to never put metal containers or aluminium foil in the microwave, because it can cause sparks.
  • You can steam vegetables in the microwave, in a microwave-safe container with a small amount of water.
  • Regularly cleaning your microwave with a damp cloth will help to stop the build-up of bacteria.
  • As a safety measure, always use the kettle or a saucepan to boil water, never your microwave.
