Natural Therapies: The benefits of tai chi

Category: WellBeing

Gone are the days when hard and fast exercise such as boxing, running and cycling were the only options.

Although these are definitely good for you, slower methods of exercising are proving to be safer and more beneficial exercise alternatives such as the traditional Chinese practice of tai chiand yoga. An ancient method of exercise, tai chi is used for promoting health, developing self-defence skills, and improving concentration and general wellbeing. The tai chi model is based on the idea that there is a bio-energy system in the body. The bio-energy or Qi (chi) gets carried round the body in energy channels called meridians – much the same way that veins carry blood around the body. The body has 12 main meridians and eight secondary meridians carrying Qi throughout the body and through the major organs. Interrupted, weak or blocked energy flow through the Qi meridiens causes illness. Tai chi stimulates the flow of Qi via slow movements. This is done through controlled shifts in weight from leg to leg, arm extensions circular motions and moving the neck from side to side. The flowing movements disguise the number of joint rotations completed in a tai chi session that are beneficial to positive Qi movement around the body. You will start to feel the benefits of tai chi because of the extra energy in your moving around your body. The slow movements are also designed to connect your mind to your body to achieve peace of mind.
