Should you exercise with a cold or flu?

Category: WellBeing

Sometimes when you’re distracted at work, stressed or lacking in motivation, your energy levels might benefit from an endorphin pick-me-up often found after a stint of exercise.

Whilst exercise is usually considered a positive influence on overall wellbeing, is it ever a hindrance to holistic health and immune system function?

As commander of your own body, doing exercise when your body is too run down can be likened to sending your body into a battle completely unprepared. A cold or flu can strip your body of the ability to bounce back, or recover from the effects of exercise, resulting in a low of energy, rather than a desired endorphin rush.

Adopting a ’10 minute rule’ might be a helpful strategy to tune in to what your body really needs. If after exercising for 10 minutes your head continues to feel stuffy and congested, it may be wise to stop, and try some gentle, light stretching exercises instead. Exercise should be avoided when you suffer from muscular aches, chills, fever, or an upset stomach.
