What is Psyllium Husk?

Category: WellBeing

Psyllium Husk, or more commonly referred to a simply psyllium, is a natural plant component known for its cleansing properties and high fibre content.

The husks cover seeds from a plant that originates in The Middle East and the Mediterranean, called Plantago Psyllium. The inner bulk of the husks are full of fibre, and subsequently psyllium is a popular ingredient in many dietary fibre supplements, such as Metamucil.

Psyllium can be incorporated into everyday meals to help provide relief for constipation, irritable bowel syndrome and diarrhoea. Here are some ideas to increase your fibre intake by incorporating Psyllium Husk into your diet.

  • Toasted muesli can be deliciously complemented by Psyllium Husk.
  • Coeliacs can use Psyllium Husk in gluten-free baking to help bind ingredients together.
  • Mix psyllium into your porridge or oat-based cereals for extra fibre.

It is good to ask a Naturopath to comment also. While I am not a Naturopath, I have learned from my Naturopath that Psyllium in particular helps bring water to the bowels, and so its benefits, including fibre; are two-fold for elimination.
